What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

I have been working at the Met Office since leaving Exeter. My current role is largely that of a data scientist working with climate observations.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I went into climate science because it’s one of the most pressing issues currently, and I knew I would value being involved with monitoring the state of the global climate.

Were you a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

I was a member of the Vegan Society, as this is a lifestyle I follow because of its benefit to the planet and animals.

I also was part of the Ultimate frisbee club, to help keep active and mentally healthy.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

I enjoyed the variety of topics covered and the scope of different projects we could choose from during practical assignments. A highlight was being able to choose my own dissertation topic and work across the maths and geography departments.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

The engagement of the lecturers with students was excellent. They were always willing to help and made the learning environment comfortable and enjoyable.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

Exeter was offering the most comprehensive data science MSc.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Having experience in Python programming has been extremely useful. Public speaking and presenting scientific results is also required in my career.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Know the fundamental linear algebra and probability mathematics. Then any more complex methods can be understood. Additionally, take some time to learn Git and becoming familiar with GitHub. These are very useful and common tools.

What are your plans for the future?

I will aim for progression to a Scientist role within the Met Office. I would like to eventually be a science lead on a project with international collaboration.
